It was 177 years ago that the Battle of The Alamo occurred, the conclusion of which left all Texan defendants of The Alamo dead by Mexican forces. A truly gruesome battle where the Texans were outnumbered 20 to 1. This is not in an odds maker sense, but a literal one. It was a battle where literally 1 Texan was to fight 20 Mexican Soldiers. But rather than retreating, the Texans fought to their death. It was once said, “there is no greater glory that can come to a man than if he dies in battle or for a noble cause, especially if the cause concerns the defense of one’s homeland or family.” By history, San Antonio and the Alamo is a city that made its name in War so it is a natural conclusion that the people of San Antonio have embraced the warrior culture in Boxing. Almost 2 centuries later I find myself on the same ground these men died on and once again 2 forces about to collide. With thousands of fans behind me, I was given the unique opportunity to sit VIP for “The One” Press Conference in San Antonio featuring pound for pound #1 Boxer in the World, Floyd “Money” Mayweather and rising superstar, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. From the atmosphere alone, I have come to the conclusion that San Antonio is a certified boxing town, thanks to the likes of Leija-Battah Promotions and their initiatives to put the Alamo City on the map of Boxing.
Below are quotes from each boxer.
Canelo Alvarez
"Thank you everybody for being here. It's a great honor for me to be here for a second time. Last time I was treated like I was at home and that's what I feel like again - like I'm at home."
"I know many of you have been here since seven in the morning. At six o'clock the press conference was supposed to start, and that's why I'm here at six o'clock - because I respect you, because you guys respect boxing. There are Mayweather fans here who also have been here since very early. I'm here for them too."
"He thinks all the boxers have to respect him and he intimidates everybody, but he doesn't intimidate me. I look forward to the fight.''
Floyd Mayweather
"After my five more fights, guess what? I think after 49-0 we may stay in this sport a little longer. This September 14, it's just another walk in the park."
"There is no city like San Antonio. You fans have been brilliant over the years. Without San Antonio, Floyd Mayweather wouldn't be where he's at today. If you don't know, Mayweather loves Mexico. Mexican and Latino fans, you know boxing.
"I'm going to sign a lot of autographs and take a lot of pictures because I'm late. That's the least I can do for you guys."
The Interesting 3
1. Floyd Mayweather was almost a good two hours late to the presser, but a trove of Fans still stayed to catch a glimpse of the Pound for Pound #1 fighter. This is a testament to his drawing power.
2. Leija Battah Promotions is the next big thing in Boxing Promotions. They are making the right moves in the right city at the right time. Boxing is on the cusp of exploding in San Antonio and Leija Battah is steam rolling the boxing initiative. One of the reasons why, is that San Antonio has always been passed over when it comes to NFL, MLB and other major sporting teams. The thirst for a big game atmosphere has only been growing stronger as San Antonio is now the 7th largest city in the United States with a population of over 1.3 Million. It was the fastest growing large city in the top ten largest cities from 2001-2010 and is on pace to repeat that feat this decade as well. Those are the ingredients for success and big things are in store for the future with San Antonio, Boxing, and Leija Battah Promotions. 3. A big shout out has to go to Rob Ferrell of Rob the Original Barbershop. Other than the fighters themselves he stole the show with a haircut portrait of Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Floyd Mayweather gave Rob The Original his signature of approval. People were clamoring for pictures of the fighters and his impressive haircut artwork. You can see the artwork below.
