I don’t believe the hype; most Super Featherweights (Escobedo) cannot beat a Heavyweight.
Adrien “The Problem” Broner had a huge problem at the scale on Friday and Saturday, his weight. His nonchalant attitude about the ordeal has left a lot of boxing fans infuriated with his actions. He showed unprofessionalism and didn’t seem to care too much that he was stripped of the WBO Super Featherweight World Title prior to fight due to failing to make weight.
When you tweet photos of Twinkies and double your burger at Steak N Shake, you have to double your opponent’s purse as well. So is Adrien the real winner? What happens when the opposition is better? Yes, his burger is stacked but so are the higher divisions in boxing.
For me, it is always perturbing to watch bouts that are undeniably mismatched. It’s even more irritating watching mismatched bouts, and then observing the obvious top-dog boast about his win. Styles make fights. They say speed beats power, so speed and power beats all of the opponents that we have seen him go against so far. I think it’s time the “champion” steps it up and starts fighting top 5 contenders.
It is virtually impossible to judge just how good Adrien Broner really is, and it will be that way until he decides to stop cherry picking his opponents and fight someone elite. Of course he’s going to look faster against a slower opponent. Evidently he’s going to look stronger against a smaller foe. Personally, I feel he decided to move up in weight so he could deliberately avoid Yuriorkis Gamboa and Gary Russell Jr like the plague. If he struggled fighting against the awkward, slow-paced boxer, Ponce De Leon, how would he be able to keep up with lightning-speed boxers like Gamboa and Russell Jr?
Broner refusing to take his career serious and make weight was a hit below the belt to Escobedo and more importantly, boxing fans. I take an interest in boxers who fight with their pride and passion for the sport. I appreciate boxers who fight for the love of the sport, not for the love of the sports car. Where do the devoted boxing fans benefit from boxers protecting their “perfect” record without fighting anyone at their level? Boxing fans shouldn’t have to suffer from witnessing poor decisions, careless boxers coming in significantly overweight, and champions matched up with the contenders from the bottom of the weight division. Take the fans out of the equation, you might as well take the boxer out of the ring and just make it a street fight. The fans provide the wealthy career for the boxers; the boxers should provide us with real entertainment. If Broner does happen to stop focusing on his 99 girl problems and takes his career serious, he’s going to have to realize “swag” and nicely brushed hair does not beat the top contenders of whatever division he feels like eating for.
